Chief Minister flagged off the buses
Hyderabad, July 16, 2007The Chief Minister, Dr. YS Rajasekhara Reddy on Monday flagged off the first batch of APSRTC buses run by compressed natural gas (CNG), the first ever introduction of environment friendly public transport buses in South India. He later boarded one of them to travel a short distance along with Transport Minister Kanna Laxminarayana and senior APSRTC officials. The APSRTC plans to induct 95 new CNG buses in Vijayawada by the end of this year.
Bhagyanagar Gas Limited would be supplying CNG to APSRTC buses by setting up a CNG filling station in RTC Depot Vijayawada. In addition to the three buses inducted, the APSRTC plans to operate another five CNG buses in the State Capital.
Ashok Leyland will supplys the CNG run buses to the APSRTC and the first bus was developed in 1987. More than 3500 buses manufactured by Ashok Leyland plied in New Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmadabad, Lucknow, Agra and Haryana. The Minister for Transport K Lakshminarayana, APSRTC Managing Director V Dinesh Reddy were present on the occasion.
