Clashes mar public hearing of National Commission

Hyderabad, July 15, 2007

The public hearing by Chairperson of the National Commission for sub-categorization of Scheduled Castes Usha Mehra was marred by protests, lathi charges and even suicide attempt by one Mala Mahanadu activist on Sunday. The Madigas who arrived in large numbers demanded early categorization of SCs but the Mala Mahanadu Activists who were also present in equal strength opposed the process. The police held the person in custody who tried for self immolation by dousing kerosene.

Mala Mahanadu leader J Prabhakar Rao boycotted the hearing while another leader K Sivaji announced his agitation programme. Usha Mehra received representations from various sub castes on Sunday from 10am to 5pm. Speaking to media, she said that she would tour Tirupati and Visakhapatnam in the next month and submit a report as early as possible. It may be noted that the Central Government has given one year time for the Commission to submit the report.

The Public hearing was conducted amidst tight security at the Hyderabad Collectorate. Police put up barbed wires banning vehicular traffic on the Collectorate Road. When the MRPS leader Manda Krishna arrived at the Collectorate to submit a memorandum, police caned MRPS and Mala Mahanadu activists for raising slogans. During the process, one person sustained head injury. SC Organizations have planned protest programmes on July 23. The MRPS leader Manda Krishna said that they would lay a siege to the State Assembly on 23 demanding immediate categorization.
