High Court dismisses case on IIT

Case filed by S. Venugopalachary, former MP of Adilabad

Hyderabad, January 31, 2007

A Division bench of the High Court of Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday dismissed the writ petition filed with regard to setting up of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) at Basar, Adilabad. The Bench was dealing with the writ petition filed by S. Venugopalachary, former MP from Adilabad and leader of the Telugu Desam Party.

Venugopalachary complained that the proposal of the State Government to set up the Indian Institute of Technology in Medak district was in violation of a unanimous resolution passed by the State Assembly wherein it was resolved to establish it at Basar. The bench felt that unless the petitioner was able to prove violation of any vested Constitutional rights, the court cannot interdict the decision-making process. The bench also took down the argument of the petitioner that the decision to shift IIT from the earlier proposed Basara to Medak is in political considerations.
