Police opened fire nearly ten rounds
Khammam, January 29, 2007The CPM sponsored anti Polavaram rally turned violent on Monday forcing the police to fire atleast ten rounds. The incident left scores injured, while three CPM activists and a gunman of the Additional Superintend of Police suffered critical injuries. Meanwhile, the District Collector, Sashibushan Kumar ordered a magisterial probe into the incident.
The CPM had taken out a rally to a lay a siege to the sub-collector's office in Bhadrachalam on Monday in protest against the Government’s decision to go ahead with the Polavaram project works in the name of flood level survey. It may noted that despite clear directions from the Apex Court's Special Empowered Committee that no wok should be taken up on Polavaram until all the clearances were secured.
The agitators' led by Bhadrachalam MP Midiam Babu Rao along with his 200 odd CPM workers tried to storm into the sub-collector’s office. The police tried initially caning and later lobbed some ten tear gas shells. The activists later regrouped at the Bridge Centre and were further strengthened with the steady inflow of activists. To clear off the traffic jam, the police wielded lathis on the protest and arrested sever leaders and manhandled the MP. As the condition is worsening, the police left with no alternative except to open fire to disperse the agitators.
