SEC issues notification for Corporations elections

Vizag, Rajahmundry and Hindupur go to polls on February 19

Hyderabad, January 25, 2007

The State Election commission on Thursday issued notification for the elections in the Municipal Corporations of Visakhapatnam, Rajahmundry and Hindupur. According to the notification, the elections will be held on February 19. Nomination papers of candidates will be accepted from January27 to February 2 and scrutiny will take place on February 3. The last date for withdrawal of papers is February 6 while the polling will be held from 7am to 5pm on February 19.

According to the notification, the counting process will be taken up on February 21 from 8am. The indirect election of Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Chairperson and Vice Chairperson will be held on February 29 for which a separate notification will be issued.

The State Election Commissioner, AVS Reddy releasing the notification told to media that the respective district collectors who are the Returning Officers would issue separate special notification on January 27. The election code of conduct would be in force only in the corporation and municipality limits only. However, the government was bared from announcing any new schemes or programmes in these civic bodies. The Greater Visakha Municipal Corporation has 72 divisions that will be going for polls. A total of 10,67,447 would be casting their votes at the 1007 polling stations. The Rajahmundry Corporation has 50 divisions with 175 polling stations in which 1,79,439 will cast their vote. Hindupur will have 38 divisions in which 104 polling stations will be setup. 82,253 people will be casting their vote.
