Hyderabad, January 22, 2007Unable to curb the smuggling of red sanders from the State to the countries like Japan and China, the State Government has decided to seek the help of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to tackle the menace. Red sanders available only in the Seshachala hill range in Kadapa and Chittoor districts is being smuggled to Japan and China for decades.
As there are restrictions on the export of red sanders, smuggling groups have thrived in the two districts and formed international smuggling syndicates with Chennai as base. The efforts of the forest department had always been feeble and the smuggling had been going on unchecked.
Speaking to press on Monday, the Minister for Forest S. Vijaya Rama Raju said that the State Government had written to the Central Government requesting it to direct the CBI to take up the case. He said that the State Government had booked several smugglers under POTA. According to him, nearly 450 tonnes of red sanders is estimated to be smuggled out every year.
