Hyderabad, January 18, 2007

Nearly fifty pilgrims were feared dead or missing when an overloaded boat in which they were traveling to cross the Krishna in the backwaters of Srisailam dam on the Kurnool-Mahabubnagar border capsized on Thursday afternoon. The Home Minister, K. Jana Reddy said that nearly 70 persons were traveling on the boat but only 15 persons could swim ashore to safety or were rescued by others. The victims were traveling to attend a festival at Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple at Singotam. Thursday was the concluding day of the festival, which is attended by nearly 40,000 devotees.

The Chief Minister who was in Delhi expressed shock over the incident. He directed the District Collector and Superintendent of Police to take all measures to help the victims. He is likely to visit on Friday on his return from Delhi. Meanwhile, the district in charge minister G. Vinod rushed to the spot and coordinate relief work. The government sought the help of Army authorities to undertake rescue operations.
