District Selection Committee scam crosses Rs 3 crore

Question mark hangs over SED officials’ role

Hyderabad, January 16, 2007

The Kadapa District Selection Committee (DSC) scam is getting bigger and it is now clear that the amount involved is more than Rs. 3 crore. More than 100 candidates are allegedly to have paid money in between Rs. 3 to Rs. 5 lakhs in the form of fixed deposits to four teachers who duped up as middlemen in the recruitment.

According to preliminary enquiry by the District Collector revealed that the optical mark reader (OMR) sheets of the candidates were tampered with to pave way for their selection. The government has already dismissed the Deputy District Educational Officer and registered criminal cases against those involved in the scam including four teachers. According to investigating officials, they ruled out the role of a retired teacher and some other persons in the scam.

The swindle became known when four candidates from one family get selection-raised suspicion among the aspirants who lodged a complaint with the concerned authorities. The police sources said that they have given blank answer sheets. Meanwhile, the police reportedly sealed the apartment and other immovable properties of an accused in the capital which worth over Rs. 40 lakhs in Hyderabad. According to the Officer on Special Duty ASC Wesley, ten special teams have been constituted to probe DSC 2006 irregularities. He said to the media that irregularities might have been occurred before DSC, on the examination day and subsequently were being investigated. Police are on the look out for the candidates who have paid money to the mediators.
