Says GO was not modified as claimed by opposition

Hyderabad, January 12, 2007

The Home Minister, K. Jana Reddy reacting sharply on the allegation of the Opposition parties that the State Government has modified the guidelines to release high profile convicts. Speaking to media on Friday, he asserted that the Government was following the guidelines famed way back in 1995. No GO was modified as being alleged by the Opposition parties.

He said high power committees comprising senior officials review the proposals of release submitted by Jails. These are forwarded to the government which, after due scrutiny announces the list of prisoners to be released. He pointed out that the prisoners were released in 1997 and 2004 n the basis of the guidelines and there is no reason for the government to favour some convicts.

The high power committee, which will verify jails’ recommendations for release of convicts on the occasion of Republic Day will met on January 16, 2007. The Home Minister gave away appointment orders for government jobs to the kin of 13 naxalite victims from Nalgonda district and also released a diary of Nalgonda police.
