Hyderabad, January 12, 2007

The recent operations by CID police against brothels in the State and Maharastra revealed that 28 percent of girls in 35 prominent Red Light areas in the county are from Andhra Pradesh according to CID sources. The sources revels that Chittoor has the highest number of traffickers numbering 19 followed by 12 in Anantapur and 10 in Kadapa.

Among coastal districts, East Godavari has 146, 41 in Prakasam, 11 in Guntur and seven in West Godavari. In Telangana Region, Nalgonda stands first with 60 traffickers while in Karimnagar, Khammam and Warangal trail behind with 32, 2 and 3 respectively. CID DIG Umapati said that traffickers lure young girls from the districts and force them into profession while some are sold and the police suspect the missing girls are taken to land up in this trade.

The DIG said that they received five complaints from girls who were forced into prostitution and sexual exploitation. He said generally, they are sent as maidservants on visitor visa, which expires after three months. Later, the agent scares her saying that she would become an illegal immigrant and would be liable for punishment. Slowly, they push them into this profession. The CID women protection cell has chalked out a plan to take on these traffickers in coordination with police in other states.
