Investigation to detect chemical weapons

Hyderabad, January 10, 2007

For the first time after India signed the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) treaty some fourteen years ago, more than a dozen units engaged in the manufacture of drugs and chemicals in Rangareddy and Medak districts have come under the scan of the Netherlands based Organization for Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. A probe is on to find out whether there any of the units have misused the scheduled chemicals sullied to them for manufacture of bulk drugs and medicines. A four-member team of the OPCW and the Industries department officials do not rul out the possibility of other units being inspected by the teams has already inspected one such unit in the coming days.

Accompanied by the representatives of the Union Ministry of Chemicals and Petrochemicals, the four-member OPCW team recently visited Gummadidala -Kanukunta Road in Medak district and searched the premises for about a week. Deputy Director of the National Authority of Chemical Weapons Convention of the Union Cabinet Secretariat also accompanied the team.

The CWC is an international treaty, which bans the development, production, stockpiling, transfer and use of chemical weapons, and also stipulates their timely destruction. After becoming a member of the world body, India mandated elimination of chemical weapons forever and to verify the destruction of the declared chemical weapons stockpiles within stipulated deadlines.
