Hyderabad, February 26, 2007

Speaking to reporters on Monday, the South Central Railway (SCR) General Manager DN Mathur reacting on the Railway budget that was presented by the Union Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav said that the SCR was allocated Rs. 1611 crore for 2007-08 that is 74 percent compared to the last year.

He said that this will be used for laying new lines, taking up of road safety measures, track and signal maintenance and gauge conversions. Nearly 30 stations in the State will be development as model stations. The Central Government sanctioned 12 new road over bridges (ROB) in the State this year, which the work on the 14 will be completed by March next. He added that SCR will also set up several automatic ticket vending machines to reduce the pressure on the booking counters and the e-ticketing facility will be extended to post offices, petro pumps and bank ATMs. He opined that the allocation will enable to create better amenities to the passengers.

The State has not get adequate importance in the budget and no new trains were introduced except the extending the existing trains. Majority of the people expressed dissatisfaction over allocation of budget to the State. The Chief Minister reacting over the budget said that the State deserves more than what has been announced by the Union Minister in the budget. He said that he would take up the matter with the Minister during his visit to Delhi. The State deserves more in view of many more SEZs were coming and there was every need for more trains. The Opposition leader N. Chandrababu Naidu commented that it as a raw deal while BJP president B. Dattatreya termed it as aimless.
