Chief Minister expresses ignorance of the GO release
Hyderabad, February 23, 2007Chief Minister Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy expressed ignorance over the issuance of the controversial GO 938 that facilitates prosecution of the media for publishing or telecasting reports that project a tarnishing image of the Government. The Chief Minister ordered a probe to look into how the order was issued and fixes responsibility on the officials responsible.
Opposition members moved adjournment motion in the Legislature but accused the Government of trying to stifle the voice of the media. Reacting over the highly agitated members of the house, the Chief Minister announced his ignorance and immediately withdrew the GO. He also announced to sack the officials who were responsible for the entire episode. He directed the Chief Secretary to conduct an inquiry and submit his report within a couple of days to enable the Government to take action on the officials responsible.
The Leader of the Opposition N. Chandrababu Naidu demanded dismissal of the officers responsible for GO and said if the Chief Minister has misled the House, he had no right to continue. The opposition said that the ignorance of the Chief Minister about the GO is nothing but misleading the House. The entire opposition rushed to the podium of the Speaker to adjourn the House. Even after it reassembled, normalcy has not been restored which led the Speaker to adjourn the House. The opposition, barring MIM, held a dharna at the Gandhi Statue at the Assembly premises for an hour.
