Hyderabad, February 22, 2007

The State Government that is already facing flack for its anti-media posture has made yet another step to make the media act more responsibly. The State Government has come up with a Government Order authorizing the Information Commissioner to file defamation cases against Newspapers and TV Channels publishing or telecasting false charges. The GO was issued on February 20, 2007 on the ground that news items were published or telecast with ulterior motives to tarnish the image of the Government.

The order sought on circumvent the existing procedure under which secretaries of respective Government Departments seek permission from the Government to initiate legal action against any publication.

With this GO, the Government vested the Information Commissioner with the power to take necessary legal action in all such cases. The GO became public only in the evening of Thursday.
