Congress making steps to grab GVMC Mayor position

Camp politics shifts to Hyderabad

Hyderabad, February 22, 2007

The Congress appears to have succeeded in its plan to woo back the rebels and wrest the mayoral post of the Greater Visakha Municipal Corporation (GVMC). The elections to the GVMC had given up a fractured verdict with neither Telugu Desam Party (TDP) nor Congress managing enough to clinch the Mayor post and candidates who stood up after coming out of the political parties winning a decisive number of seats.

The rebels who emerged victorious have thus turned key players. Of the 72 sets in the GVMC, the TDP bagged 32, Congress 27, CPM 2 and CPI 1 besides ten independents a majority of whom owe their loyalty to the ruling party. The Ministers Konathala Ramakrishna and Kanna Lakshminarayana reportedly succeeded in wishing the rebels away to the ruling party camp.

The Ministers along with independents left for the State Capital for discussions with the party leadership. In a related development, the two parties made it clear that they would not give the Mayor post to rebels but offers to give any other post according to available sources.
