Junior Doctors strike takes a new turn
Hyderabad, December 7, 2007
The court has directed the police to book cases against the MIM MLA Afsar Khan and 29 others and to arrest them. It may be recalled that the Junior Doctors went on a strike since December 2, 2007 in protest against manhandling of a colleague allegedly by the legislator and his henchmen. The Andhra Pradesh High Court and the State Human Rights Commission warned the agitating doctors that they would ask the Medical Council of India (MCI) to cancel their registration if they did not call off their agitation. The Human Rights Commission pulled up both the MLA and the junior doctors. It felt that all were at fault. It directed the junior doctors to resume duties by December 8, 2007.
The 12th Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate directed the Nampally Police to register cases under various sections including Section 307 of Indian Penal Code (IPC) against Karwan MLA Afsar Khan and 29 of his supporters. The magistrate further directed the Station House Officer of Nampally police station to probe the matter and submit a report.
A PG Doctor N Suresh Babu lodged a private complaint. Six witnesses to the incident were present in the court when the complaint was lodged. Suresh Babu alleged that Afsar Khan and his supporters abused doctors in filthy language and beat up some of the doctors including Dr. Praveena Chanda. He alleged that when the women doctors objected, they were abused and pushed. The MLA and his supporters even threatened the doctors that they would be raped and burnt alive in the hospital itself.
