Chief Minister explains initiatives taken for uplifting poor

Hyderabad, December 30, 2007

The President of India, Pratiba Patil has lauded the initiatives of the Andhra Pradesh State Government in payment of compensation for acquiring agricultural lands for the proposed Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in the State. She expressed her happiness on Sunday that the farmers did not register even a single protest in the State.

The President said that women empowerment programmes through Self Help Groups were being implemented effectively in the State. She was amazed to learn that under Rajiv Arogyasri, 1.08 crore people living below poverty line were given medical care in private hospitals. She said this to the Chief Minister, Dr.YS Rajasekhara Reddy who called on her on Sunday morning and explained the various initiatives taken by the government to uplift the poor. The Chief Minister said that the integrated relief and rehabilitation package offered to the farmers for giving up their lands for SEZs for various industries has earned their support and his government was in the process of grounding 40 of the 70 SEZs sanction for the State.

According to a press release, the Chief Minister, Dr.YS Rajasekhara Reddy said that the Pavala Vaddi scheme for SHG women has propelled the women empowerment programme in the State. Nearly 90 lakh women were provided bank linkage to the tune of Rs.6,500 crore in 2007-09 and is planned to give Rs.14,000 during the coming year. He also explained the salient features of Rajiv Udyogasri under which rural and urban youth were being trained in several trades to be absorbed in IT, textiles and other sectors.
