Government offers CID Investigation into incident

Hyderabad, December 3, 2007

The attack on the junior doctors at Niloufer Hospital by an MIM MLA Afsar Khan has snowballed into a major issue. The AP Junior Doctors Association (APJDA) announced an indefinite strike in all teaching hospitals that is supported by senior doctors. The APJDA said on Monday that it would meet on Tuesday afternoon to decide the future course of action if the Government did not concede their demands. The demands include registration of attempt to murder case against the MLA Afsar Khan and his associates, round the clock security at hospitals and strict punishment for attack on doctors.

The State Government has deputed two Ministers, Galla Aruna and M Mukesh Goud to hold talks with the agitating doctors who squatted on the road since Sunday night. The on the road negotiations did not fructify even as the busy thoroughfare witnessed a major traffic jam. The dead lock continued until late in the Monday evening. The police arrested 87 doctors and released them later on bail. The health care at the Niloufer hospital deteriorated further even four more children died soon after they were admitted shows the impact of strike by junior doctors. Even though, the senior doctors were attending to the patients, the absence of junior doctors hit the medical care. Meanwhile, the APJDA has threatened to boycott emergency services if their demands are not met. Medical services were partially hit at Gandhi and Osmania Medical hospitals also as the doctors extending their support.

The State Government‘s offer to transfer the investigation to the CID and suspend a police sub inspector did not cut ice with the agitating doctors. The Ministers also said that the government was willing to enact a law providing stringent punishment in such cases that would provide round the clock security at the hospitals. The APJDS said that they will intensify the agitation across the State if an attempt to murder case is not booked against the MLA and questioned how an Sub Inspector be suspended for no fault of his part. APJDS State president G Raju said that the MLA’s inhuman behavior was nothing short of an attack on medical profession.
