Talks between Singareni workers and Regional Labour Commissioner fail

Indefinite strike from December 31, 2007

Hyderabad, December 28, 2007

The Singareni Collieries Workers’ Union (SCWU) affiliated to All India Trade Union Congress has reiterated its resolve to go on indefinite strike from December 31, in protest against the Government’s unrelenting stand on their legitimate demand to scrap collection of professional tax from employees.

A union delegation met the Regional Labour Commissioner Ramana Kumar for conciliation talks. Later, the union leaders said that the talks were failed and have decided to go ahead with indefinite strike from December 31, 2007.

At a press conference on Friday, the general secretary of SCWU, V Seetharamiah, expressed concern over the management issuing a circular on December 13 regarding recovery of professional tax from employees at enhanced rates with effect from December 1. They regretted that the government was stubborn in the issue.
