Miscreants attack Nandigama girls hostel

Watchman and hostler severely injured

Vijayawada, December 28, 2007

Barely after the gruesome murder of a B.Pharmacy student Meera in her hostel room at Ibrahimpatnam, some unidentified persons assaulted two inmates of a Social Welfare Girls Hostel at Nehrunagar area of Nandigama in Krishna district in the wee hours of Friday.

The miscreants bludgeoned watchwomen B Varalakshmi on her head with an iron rod and injured Umamaheswari, a class VII student who was sleeping by Varalakshmi’s side. The condition of Varalakshmi is said to be critical and she is rushed to NRI Hospital at Chinakakani in Guntur. Umamaheswari managed to escape with minor injuries.

According to police sources, the culprits entered into the girls hostel by scaling the compound wall and attacked the duo at the entrance within the hostel premises while the hostlers are sleeping in their rooms. Only after Umamaheswari raised an alarm the inmates came out of their rooms forcing the culprits to take to their heels. Police are yet to ascertain the reason behind the incident. Expressing concern over the poor security arrangements, many parents have decided to shift their children out the hostel.
