State Cabinet clears ordinance
Hyderabad, December 17, 2007
The State Government acted swiftly and managed to convince the Andhra Pradesh Government Doctors Association to call off the strike. The State Government finally cleared an ordinance on the safety of the medical fraternity on Monday.
The Junior Doctors remained unyielding on their demand for the arrest of two MIM MLAs even as the AP High Court took a serious view of the agitation and expressed its anguish and displeasure at the attitude of the agitating doctors. The High Court asked the Government to furnish the details of alternative arrangements being made to tackle the emerging medical crisis.
According to the ordinance, making an assault on medical staff in government as well as in private hospitals, a cognizable and non-bailable offence with a three-year imprisonment. In the case of property loss, the loss will be recovered from the assailants. The junior doctors were holding discussions till late on Monday night and could not come to conclusion. The medical services in all the hospitals across the State were paralyzed.
