Home Minister says Government is following standard guidelines

Hyderabad, August 10, 2007

The Home Minister, K Jana Reddy said that the government has taken a decision to release 1200 life convicts from various jails across the State on August 15 albeit with some safe guards. Speaking at a press conference, he said that the Government is following the same guidelines under which life convicts wee granted amnesty in 1997, 1999 and 2000.

The Home Minister said that the Police department will keep an eye on the released prisoners, who have to give a bond for Rs.25,000 each and visit the police stations of their respective areas once in three months. This precaution is being taken to ensure that the released prisoners do not take the old path and commit crime again.

He clarified that if the released prisoner commits any crime, then the amnesty granted to him or her will be cancelled. He said that the Government has taken the decision keeping in view of the demand from almost all political parties.
