Hyderabad gets A-I status

Central Government employees to get more allowances

Hyderabad, August 31, 2007

With the Government of India upgrading the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation as A-I city from September, central government employees are all set to get extra House Rent, Allowance and City Compensatory Allowance. Union Finance Ministry's Department of Expenditure has issued orders on Friday on the basis of 2001 population census with the amalgamation of 12 municipalities with the MCH to form GHMC.

The Census of India classifies any urban area with more than 50 lakh population as Mega Cities or A-I cities. Hyderabad with 54 lakh after becoming GHMC came into being joins five other cities in the country having such a population. Hyderabad now joins the league of Greater Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi, Chennai and Bangalore.

The Confederation of Central Government employees has earlier appealed to the Centre to consider A-I status. Independent MLC Prof. K Nageshwar and Secunderabad MP Anjan Kumar Yadav have urged the Centre to declare the status with retrospective effect from April 16, 2007 when GVMC was formed.
