Amnesty demands impartial inquiry

Hyderabad, August 3, 2007

The Amnesty International on Friday demanded the State Government should ensure that the judicial inquiry ordered by the government should be completely thorough and impartial. It also strongly condemned the unfortunate incident.

In a statement issued, Amnesty International observed that the parameters of the inquiry need to be promptly and clearly outlined. The inquiry should determine whether the use of force by the police was consistent with national law and international standards including the Basic Principals on the Use of Force and Firearms and the code of Conduct for Law Enforcement officials said the release.

Amnesty International while welcoming the judicial inquiry ordered by the government, it also demanded the government to criminally prosecute any police officer found having resorted to excessive use of force. It opined that the action of the police at the agitators violated the principals, and the victims' right to life.
