Landmark judgment in police encounter

Government directed to pay compensation of Rs. 1 Lakh each

Nizamabad, August 2, 2007

In the alleged exchange of fire that took place on the hillocks of Nagaram near Nizamabad on July 20, 1991 in which two persons branded as naxals were killed by police. The Nizamabad IV Additional Sessions Judge Achyuta Reddy on Thursday directed the Government to pay compensation of Rs. 1 Lakh each to the kin.

The victims moved to the civil courts alleging that their children were detained in Narasgoud street in the town, bumped off after which the police came up with an yarn that the two had died in the encounter. The victims made a plea to the court to direct the Government to pay compensation.

The court, in September, 2005 directed the government to pay compensation to the kin of the victims. But, the police went for an appeal to the additional sessions judge court that upheld the lower court's judgment on Thursday.
