Not all convicts to be released on August 15
Hyderabad, August 14, 2007The State Government had earlier identified and planned for the release of nearly 1200 life convicts on the Independence Day, but of late the decision was deferred the release of life convicts by at least a fortnight.
The Chief Minister, Dr.YS Rajasekhara Reddy held a meeting with the Home Minister, K Jana Reddy and officials of the police and prisons departments and took the decision. The meeting was held to discuss the request that came in from some political parties and relatives of the prisoners for relaxation of the conditions imposed for the release.
The Government issued two GOs a few days ago, listing the guidelines for releasing prisoners. Meanwhile, relatives of some prisoners approached the State Human Rights Commission about certain anomalies in the guidelines and the SHRC asked the government to file a report within a week. The Home Minister speaking to media said that there were representations from certain sections and at the same time the government is trying to make the process error free. The list has been prepared and are verifying it again.
