High Court directs Police Chief not to issue any statements on attack on Taslima Nasrin

Directs Chief Metropolitan Magistrate to serve notices

Hyderabad, August 13, 2007

The recent attack by the MIM MLAs along with their followers on the Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasrin last week has brought in few developments in recent past. The Andhra Pradesh High Court comprising Chief Justice GS Singhvi and Justice CV Nagarjuna Reddy on Monday ordered the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate of Nampally court to serve notices to the Central and State Governments, Principal Secretary (Home) and three MIM MLAs.

The bench, while appointing Advocate General CV Mohan Reddy, Senior Counsel D Prakash Reddy and Advocate Ravishankar Jandhyala as amicus curie directed the Hyderabad Police Commissioner Balwinder Singh not to give any statement in this matter. Meanwhile, the Andhra Pradesh State Human Rights Commission Chairman Justice B Subhashan Reddy directed Balwinder Singh to file a report on the incident by September 17, 2007. The bench was dealing with a petition filed by a practicing advocate VL Narasimha Rao who said that Taslima Nasrin came to Hyderabad as a guest but was attacked and warned that she would be killed if she visits the city again. He further contended that all religions gave women due respect and honored them but the blatant threat was nothing but lowering country's image in the eyes of other nations.

The Chief Justice directed the Government Pleader appearing for the Home Department and also wanted to know whether the Government was siding with the perpetrators of the attack and what action has been taken against them even as everybody was issuing threats to her after the incident.
