79 new varieties of ornamental, flowering plants placed at the mela
Hyderabad, August 11, 2007The Chief Minister, Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy on Saturday inaugurated a 'Nursery Mela' at People's Plaza, Necklace Road. For the first time, nearly 79 new varieties of ornamental and flowering plans gathered from different parts of the country were placed in the mela. The Chief Minister along with the Minister for Energy Mohd Ali Shabbir went round their stalls and interacted with the stall owners.
Apart from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra put up their stalls. The five days mela is being organized by the department of Horticulture. Speaking to media, the Horticulture Commissioner K Madhusudana Rao said that the mela is intended to promote nursery and increase awareness among the public about different varieties of plants.
Nearly 114 stalls consisting of nurseries, irrigation systems, garden tools and accessories, seeds, tissue culture plants,fertilizers, potteries, medical products and others have been put up for the pubic display and farmers. He said that under National Horticulture Mission, the Central Government is providing Rs.150 crore for increasing and rejuvenating horticulture crops like mango, cashew, papaya, oranges, banana and other fruits in the State. The department proposes to hold this type of melas at the district levels in a big way.
