Assistant Accounts Officer Subrahmaniam surrenders

Hyderabad, April 6, 2007

Sarasa Devi, considered to be a kingpin in the scam involving diversion of Government funds to a tune of Rs. 10 crores was arrested by the police from a hotel. The funds belongs to District Primary Education Project (DPEP)'s Sarva Siksha Abhiyam (SSA) program. Sarasa Devi, aged 45 is from Kadapa and has got contacts from the Chief Ministers Office (CMO) and used the influence to divert funds to her advertisement agency. She acquired several properties using the funds in Hyderabad.

Earlier Subramanyam who works as an Assistant (Junior) Accounts Officer surrendered before the police. The scam came to light when Vijaya Bank has sent a letter communication of a bounced cheque to the Finance and Accounts Officer (FAO). The officials were surprised about this because they do not have an account with the Vijaya Bank at the branch. They came to know that an account in the name of FAO was opened at Vijaya Bank, Marredpally Branch and that this account is used to encash cheques.
