Ragging believed to be the reason for firing
Hyderabad, April 21, 2007A Bachelor of Engineering (BE) student of the Deccan College of Engineering shot at his college mate even as his fellow students watched in horror. The shooter, Umedullah Khan is a second year student pumped at least three bullets into the victim, Mukarram Ali Khan Siddiqui. Siddiqui is currently undergoing treatment in a corporate hospital and his condition is said to be serious.
The accused student was detained in second year itself. Incidentally, the college belongs to the Majlis Ittehadul Musilimeen (MIM) supremo Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi and is located at Dar-us-Salam. According to police sources and eye witness, Khan walked up to the victim who was sitting along with his friends at the main entrance of the college. He started abusing him and all of sudden has pulled out a licensed .32 revolver and started firing at him at a close range. It is said that Mukarram stumbled and fell. Three bullets went into his body - one of which pierced through his spinal cord.
Meanwhile, the shocked students overpowered Umedullah and handed him over to the police, while the other fellow students rushed him to hospital where his condition is said to be serious. Differences cropped up between the two students after Umedullah lodged a police complaint in February that Mukarram had ragged him. According to police sources, he was arrested and had subsequently come out on bail and had resumed his old ways.
