Minor irrigation scheme
Hyderabad, April 20, 2007The World Bank has approved (US $ 189 million) Rs.950 crore loan for the community based Tank Management project. The project was approved by the World Bank's Board of Executive Directors. The project is aimed at improving the physical and operational performance of above 3000 tank systems with a command area of about 7.5 lakh acres, securing the safety of the tank structures and improving on farm water management and efficiency.
Out of the sanctioned amount, $16.1 million have been earmarked for institutional strengthening including capacity building, technical assistance and utilizing the services of NGOs. For tank system improvement US $139.7 millions have been earmarked in addition to US $9 million for participatory ground water management.
The project will be implemented by the Irrigation Department over a period of five years. Irrigation Secretary will be the over all project coordinator and it will be managed through a Project Management Unit. The unit will be headed by project Coordinator, of the rank of Commissioner or Special Commissioner.
