Not awarding pass marks in semester examinations believed to be the reason
Warangal, April 17, 2007For the first time in the history of University, nearly 300 students led by Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in the Kakatiya University roughed up five professors for not awarding pass marks in the semester examinations to 14 students of Master of Science (Msc) - Physics III and IV semester.
According to sources, the students went on a rampage ransacked the Department of Physics and manhandled five professors. The students raised slogans and entered the department building ransacking everything they could find in the premises and attacked the Head of Physics Department Suresh Babu, University College Department Council (CDC) Dean Bhaskara Rao, Professors Altaf Hussain, Gangadhara Reddy and Ramakanth. The Head of the Department, the CDC Dean and Altaf were seriously injured and were shifted to MGM Hospital.
The University administration called on the police and on seeing them, the agitators fled. However, the police chased them and took some of them into custody. The teachers union charged the ABVP with provoking the students alleging that the professors had willfully failed the 14 students. Meanwhile, the University Registrar S. Jagannadha Swamy and other professors threatened to resign their posts in protest against the students misbehavior and lodged a complaint with the University Vice Chancellor V. Gopal Reddy and demanded severe punishment to those responsible.
