More power cuts in towns may go for sometime
Hyderabad, April 14, 2007
Following a drastic fall in demand for power, AP Transco has stopped purchase of electricity from many external sources. The utility is now preparing to lift power cuts in villages and towns in a phased manner starting from April 20, 2007. The demand dropped to 157.6 million units as compared to a high of 185 million units in the first week of April during the year.
AP Transco has stopped purchase to the tune of 7 million units a day from other states. The state used to purchase power from Punjab, Haryana, Tripura, West Bengal and Orissa as well as from private suppliers such as Tata, Adani and Nav Bharat. The purchase of power is now restricted to Jindal, Reliance and NVVL of the NTPC. It also confirmed the Hydel power generation will be to a tune of 7 million units a day with a view to preserving water for using the peak summer months. Only 163 MW out of 1670 MW of installed capacity the Srisailam hydel complex is operated now.
Meanwhile, the Chief Minister, Dr. YS Rajasekhara Reddy reviewed the power supply situation on Saturday. He directed the officials to see that supply related problems were settled immediately during their visit to villages as part of Prajapatham.
