Re-Poll to be held in 52 LAC constituencies
Hyderabad, April 14, 2007The Election Commission has ordered for a re-poll in 52 booths of the Local Authorities seats of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council. These seats are spread across eight districts in the state and will be conducted on April 25. The polling will be held from 8am to 4pm. Counting of votes polled in these districts and the polling of other districts will be taken up from 8am on April 27.
Out of a total 31 LACs originally scheduled to go to the polls, the election in five constituencies was unanimous while the exercise was not taken up in three LACs in Ranga Reddy District and Hyderabad in view of move to constitute Greater Hyderabad.
Meanwhile, the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President K Keshava Rao commented that the Election Commission could have invalidated the votes cast through open ballot, but setting the election aside was not proper. He added that the election could be set aside if the open ballot materially affected the elections but the Commission had no evidence of it. He opined that the provision of secret ballot in the Representation of People Act maintained that the officials concerned should ensure secrecy but not the voters.
