Jaganmohan Reddy declines Government land offer

Decision taken due to criticism by opposition political parties

Hyderabad, April 1, 2007

The Chief Minister's son YS Jaganmohan Reddy on Sunday said that he would not accept the government land for a cement plant in Kadapa district. In this connection, it may be recalled tht the State Cabinet had last week approved sale of 487 acres of government land in Kadapa district at Rs. 1 lakh per acre to Raghuram Cements Limited where he is a director. The Cabinet decision was widely criticized by the opposition leader N. Chandrababu Naidu.

In a letter addressed to the Minister for Revenue Dharmana Prasada Rao, he offered to set up the cement factory in the district in view of its backwardness and to avoid acquiring agricultural land, the company requested the government to allot waste land for which the Government had accepted it to allot the land which is completely barren and has never been used for cultivation.

In the letter, he said to avoid controversy he had decided to establish the cement unit in another location. He asked the Government to put the land for public auction to allow true market forces to determine the price. The Chief Minister commented that Jagan Mohan Reddy had refused the land as he might have been hurt by criticism of some Opposition parties and media. He criticized the TDP president for politicizing the land issue during the all party visit to Delhi.
