Huge weaponry seized at transport office

Rocket launchers, empty shells and improvised landmines meant for Maoist

Mahabubnagar, September 8, 2006

Police in Mahaboobnagar and Prakasam districts were busy all day when they searched various transport offices and checked various parcels and unclaimed articles. The incident came to light when a person who was taking a gunny bag delivery from the Kranthi Transports to CPI (Maoist) Secretary Sudhakar and was picked up by the police at Achampet Police Station. The police immediately raided the transport office and seized the weaponery. They alerted the state police who communicated the information swiftly to all major locations. The consignment was booked in Chennai and other places and meant for Mahaboobnagar.

Meanwhile, Police who raided transport offices in Prakasam too seized some weaponry. The seized items include 26 gunny bags that contained 10 rocket launchers with stands and 275 rocket shells amongst others. Two suspects in Mahaboobnagar and Cuddapah were taken into custody.

Director General of Police (DGP) Swaranjit Sen gave a detailed note of how the police personnel were able to 'make a significant step against the maoists' in a press conference in Mahaboobnagar. He said that the Chennai police too were alerted. Forensic experts say that the rockets are finely chiseled, sophisticated and relatively modern and could be operated on targets in the range of 150 to 500 meters. Thus blasting of targets such as police stations and VIP cars are more easier with these.
