National Fisheries Board launch on September 9 2006

Sharad Pawar to open Board

Hyderabad, September 7, 2006

A National Fisheries Development Board on the lines of National Diary Development Board will be inaugurated by the Union Agriculture Minister Shard Pawar at Acharya NG Ranga University Auditorium on September 9, 2006. NFDB with its headquarters at Hyderabad has a budget outlay of Rs.2100 crore for the period from 2006-2012. It was set up under the department of Animal Husbandry department, Dairying and Fisheries, Union Ministry of Agriculture.

The chief executive of NFDB S Ayyappan, speaking to media on Thursday said that its main objective was to achieve effective marketing arrangements to ensure adequate returns to the fishers and the farmers and make available good quality fish at an affordable price. NFDB will also achieve sustainable management and conservation of natural aquatic resources including the fish stocks, apply modern tools of research and development including bio technology for optimizing output from fisheries, generate and substantial employment and train, empower women in fisheries sectors.

Fish and fish products have emerged as the largest group in the country's farm exports, with 5.2 lakh tons in terms of quantity and Rs.7,200 crores in value. Chief Minister, Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy, Union Minister for State for Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Taasilmuddin will attend the function.
