State Government says singing of Vande Mataram is mandatory

Reservations of Muslims ignored

Hyderabad, September 5, 2006

Not withstanding the reservations by some Muslim groups, the State Government is going ahead on recitation of 'Vande Mataram' in all educational institutions on September 7, 2006 as finale to mark the culmination of centenary of adoption of it as a national song. The contention of various Muslim groups was that the members of the community will not pray to anyone other than 'Allah'.

In an informal chat with media after garlanding the statue of late President Sarvepalle Radhakrishnan, the Minister for School Education N.Rajyalaksmi said that there is no going back on the decision of the State Government on recitation of two stanzas of the National Song at 11am on September 7, 2006.

She dismissed as baseless the reports that Minority Welfare Minister opposed singing of the national song in educational institutions. The Chief Minister's Office issued directions to School Education Secretary to issue necessary instructions to all concerned in this aspect. It is understood that singing of national song is a mandatory in all educational institutions.
