To check illicit plying contract carriages of Private Operators

Hyderabad, September 5, 2006

The Transport Minister, K Lakshminarayana speaking at a press conference on Tuesday said that an enforcement wing will be created in the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) to curb illicit plying of contract carriages by private operators on routes allotted to it in order to avoid loss of revenue. He said 49 Assistant Brake Inspectors will be recruited through the Andhra Pradesh Public Service Commission.

Referring to some reports in pint media that bus routes being privatized, the Minister said new routes were proposed for being offered to private operators in Anantapur and Chittor districts. However, this was very much in line with the Centre's guidelines that five per cent of the bus services in a town area must be offered to prive operators leaving 95 percent for public sector undertakings.

He further said that there was no ulterior motives behind withdrawal of the services routes were condemned by the Transport department while the beneficiaries dropped out on their own in 25 routes following accidents. He assured that efforts are going on to purchase new buses for SETWIN and restart the services.
