Air Deccan Chairman says smaller airports would cost Rs. 10 to 20 crores to build

Hyderabad, September 3, 2006

Speaking at a seminar organized as part of Indian Travel Congress on Sunday, the Chief Minister Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy said that the Government would roll out an innovative tourism policy for the State after discussing it in the Cabinet scheduled to meet on September 8.

The Air Deccan Chairman and Managing Director GR Gopinath requested the Chief Minister to develop smaller airports atleast in six towns in the State to give a fillip to domestic tourism. He wanted 25 percent passenger support from the State to run the airlines to the smaller towns. He said that the smaller airports would be built at a cost of Rs.10 to 20 crores and the Centre would also give matching grants for the States.

Speaking at the valedictory function organized by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader LK Advani called upon the travel industry to raise its voice against deteriorating internal security such as Naxalism and terrorism as travel and tourism industry cannot continue so long as these issues continue. He said that India's travel industry had a long way to go to harness its potential. There was an upbeat mood in travel industry as India was in top five bracket in the world as global destination.
