Groundnut crop returns low

Hyderabad, October 8, 2006

Agriculture Commissioner Poonam Malakondiah said that the state has reported impressive increase in the Paddy and Cotton crops during the Kharif season. Speaking at a press conference, she said that paddy crop areas increased from 22.7 lakh to 27.6 lakh hecters. This would result in an increase of production to 85 lakh tonnes. Other food grains and pulses would touch 15 lakh tonnes this year.

On the other hand, cotton crop area increase would result in the cotton production from 24 lakh bales as reported last year to 34 lakh bales. Groundnut and Maize showed decrease in production and this would result in drop by 2 and 4 lakh tonnes respectively.

Ms. Poonam said that the Agriculture Department would focus more on crops such as groundnut, maize, Blackgram and greengram as they did not good returns during the year.
