Already gets allotment for virgin coal block

Hyderabad, October 31, 2006

The Andhra Pradesh Mineral Development Corporation (APMDC) will take up cal mining activity, an area open only to the Singareni Collieries Company limited so far. A new policy allowing this facility for the APMDC was approved by the State Cabinet at its meeting on Tuesday.

The APMDC has already secured an allotment of 15 square km virgin coal block through the Union Ministry of Coal under the liberalized policy. As per the bid arrangement, it has been asked to share the block with the Orissa Mining Corporation and the coal availability in the block is estimated at over 750 million tonnes. The Information Minister Mohd.Ali Shabbir and APMDC MD VD Rajagopal told the media that the mining activity would be launched immediately in the block. It would also try to exploit six coal blocks identified in the tribal areas of the State extending over 33 square km with estimated deposits of 480 million tonnes.
