Depression over Bay of Bengal intensifies
Hyderabad, October 29, 2006The Government has alerted all the nine coastal districts right from Srikakulam to Nellore on high alert as the depression over the Bay of Bengal intensified into a deep depression and lay East of Kavali.
Under the influence, heavy and widespread rains battered the State for the second day on Sunday. The downpour flooded several low lying areas and normal life was disrupted especially in Visakhapatnam and Prakasam districts. Control rooms in coastal districts were set up. Fishermen were warned not to venture into the sea. Flight services were cancelled due to inclement weather. The district administrations have evacuated nearly 10,000 people to safer places and ten relief camps were opened in Prakasam district.
The Minister for Revenue, D Prasada Rao reviewed the situation with the officials of Disaster Management Department. Meanwhile, a weather forecast said that the coastal Andhra and Telangana would experience heavy to heavier rains in the next 48 hours.
