94 liquor shops licences suspended

Violation of MRP norms

Hyderabad, October 27, 2006

Prohibition and Excise Department personnel cracked the whip on licensed liquor shops for violating maximum retail price (MRP) restricts and registered 286 cases against them and temporarily suspended the licences of 94 liquor shops and suspended four inspectors of the department for dereliction of duty.

The Director of Prohibition and Excise KV Rajendranath Reddy speaking to media said the MRP violation was noticed more in the coastal region and licences of 94 shops were suspended. The department has also decided to impose a compounding fee of Rs.50,000 for each violation.

He said that 15 cases were registered in Srikakulam and another 15 in Vizianagaram, 28 in Visakhapatnam, 34 in East Godavari and 48 in Guntur, 30 in Ongole, 27 in Nellore, 16 in Warangal, 23 in Khammam and 7 in Kadapa. He further said stringent action would be taken on those violators and officers who fail to supervise the MRP rates in liquor shops.
