Crackdown on motorists
Hyderabad, October 25, 2006
The Transport Commissioner, Ajay Misra said that the department has begun crackdown on motorists involved in road accidents by suspending their driving licences. Tough the suspension of licence based in prima facie evidence of accidents, they could be cancelled if the courts found the drivers guilty.
As on date, the departments have suspended 386 driving licences of heavy vehicle and four wheeler drivers for their alleged involvement in accidents. He said that in case of fatal accident, the police register a case of rash and negligent driving under Section 304 (A) of Indian Penal Code against the driver and consequently the driver will be arrested but there will be no deterrent action against such drivers when they get released on bail immediately.
District wise statistics of lances cancelled are Visakhapatnam-255, Srikakulam - 23, Kadapa - 22, Vizianagaram - 18, Warangal - 16, Hyderabad - 15, Krishna - 14, Khammam - 12, East Godavari - 10 and West Godavari - 1 according available sources.
