$500 million for Irrigation Sector
Hyderabad, October 23, 2006
The World Bank has hinted a massive of USD 1 Billion as assistance to the State. The funds would be involving projects in various sectors in the next coming four years. Out of this, $500 million is likely to be for Irrigation sector while the remaining for structural adjustment and urban reforms.
Addressing at a press conference on Monday, the World Bank Managing Director (Operations) Grame Wheeler said that the bank is not imposing any conditions in providing assistance. The bank's assistance policy reforms based benefiting the least advantageous sections and clarified that the bank was not against subsidies and all it wanted was that they should be well targeted, transparent and reflected in the budget. Answering questions, he said the proposed structural adjustment was the third one under consideration for Andhra Pradesh as the State had already implemented the policy reforms and achieved impressive results in some core areas.
