Cuddapah, October 2, 2006The Vijayawada Mayor T Sakunthala said Mayors should be vested special powers to ensure that municipal corporations achieved the desired goals. Speaking at a seminar on 'Basic amenities in Municipal Corporations' organized by CPI on Sunday, she alleged that powers vested with the Mayors were nominal and corporations were failing to achieve gals due to laxity of officials concerned. Though the 74th Constitutional amendment envisaged special powers to local bodies, they were failing to provide basic amenities due to lopsided official reports.
