Rs. 3.41 crores seized

Hyderabad, October 19, 2006

In a surprising move, the officials of the Department of Income Tax (DIT) Intelligence recovered Rs. 2.88 crore from the Managing Director of a leading Hotel group Ramesh Kapoor who flew in to the city by an Indian Airlines flight on Friday morning.

The officials of the DIT seized Rs. 53 lakhs more which is also not accounted for. The officials acted on the information received to them. The officials of the DIT also held the hotelier's son Amit Kapoor who was accompanying him for interrogation. Preliminary investigation revealed that the room was being shared by an IAS officer of UP cadre and a Chartered Accountant US Das from Bhubaneswar. The IAS officer was being questioned about his role in the case. The DIT officials who interrogated is understood to have admitted that the money was given go him by the hotelier in Delhi a few days ago. Das said that he took the cash to Bhubaneswar and brought it here on the instructions of the hotelier. The seized amount was deposited in the State Bank of India, Begumpet Airport Branch.

Earlier, acting on a tip off from the Air India Intelligence Unit in Delhi that the hotelier was moving with huge cash stashed in two bags, the officials detained him upon his arrival at Begumpet Airport. Neither the hotelier nor his son provided proper information during the course of interrogation. The accused claimed that the money was intended for buying land in Hyderabad and tried to speak to their local contacts but they did not respond. Speaking with the media, the Director General (Investigation) M Ahmed said the accused was being quizzed and was likely to be rested later after detailed investigation.
