Venkat Reddy and 7 others were convicted in a 2002 murder case
Hyderabad, October 11, 2006
In what is considered as a landmark judgment, the Supreme Court of India has set aside the pardon granted by the then Governor of Andhra Pradesh Sushil Kumar Shinde. The pardon was granted 14 months ago to Gouru Venkat Reddy who was convicted in a murder case.
Gouru Venkat Reddy and 7 others were convicted of twin-murders that took place in September 19, 1995. They were convicted in the sessions court in 2002. The High Court has upheld the sentence but the Supreme Court has reduced it to 10 years. However, on August 11, 2005, the then Governor has granted pardon.
Shock gripped the Nandikotkur constituency when the Supreme Court verdict has come out. Supporters of the Congress party were seen dull and unhappy. It may be recalled Charita Reddy, wife of Venkat Reddy, is the MLA for the Nandikotkur constituency.
