Fire in Salar Jung Museum

Damage estimated to Rs.15 lakhs according to initial reports

Hyderabad, November 3, 2006

A fire broke out in the auditorium of the Nawab Mir Turab Bhavan of the Salar Jung Museum on Friday morning. The fire was doused before it could spread further, thus saving precious Nizam's Jewellary on exhibition in the adjacent eastern block. Four fire tenders were rushed to control the fire after the Fire Services Department was alerted. It took two hours to douse the flames because of smoke.

District Fire Officer J. Venkat Narayana Rao said that in fact, there was more smoke than the fire because of the seats, carpets and carton boxes in the auditorium preventing the fire personnel from pinpointing the source of fire. The Fire officials said that the auditorium was not equipped with a fire alarm system that could have reduced the damage.

Except auditorium, all other galleries are equipped with latest smoke detecting alarm systems, CCTVs for monitoring and even fire hydrants.
